Backing for National Day of Prayer

Baptists churches have been encouraged to take part in a national day of prayer and worship at Wembley stadium later this year

BThe Carrying the Torch event on September 29 is hosted by Global Day Of Prayer London in collaboration with national organisations, key denominations, the local churches and regional networks.

The event is an invitation to the church community to come together at the end of the Olympics seasoon and bow before the presence of God and invite His divine intervention in the affairs of this nation.

New president of the Baptist Union of Great Britain the Revd Chris Duffett, has urged Baptists to take part. ‘Come to Wembley. Come and pray. Come and be envisioned for God’s heart for the nations. God calls us to be world changers. This day is very important,’ he said.
‘This isn’t one particular church’s gig. We are called to be people of prayer and evangelism. The appeal of Global Day of Prayer for me is about having God’s heart to go out and bring the good news of Jesus. It is a catalyst for mission. I want to encourage as many Baptist Christians as possible to join me at Wembley Stadium.’

Already the Baptist Union has been supporting this National Day of Prayer and Worship. The Revd Ian Bunce, head of Mission explained, ‘I’ve been attending a lot of the meetings. This is a great opportunity for Christians to be together, praying and worshipping.’

‘Wembley Stadium will be like a service station. Psalm 46 is one of my favourites, and Eugene Peterson’s translation says to ‘take a step out of the traffic’. At a service station you take time out, you get refreshed then you go back onto the motorway. As Christians come out of Wembley that movement back onto the motorway of life will affirm what we are all called to do.

'We are all called to be salt and light. Wembley will be like the salt cellar, but the salt will get dispersed and it will make a massive difference. Wembley will impact Wigan, Wrexham and Wales – and beyond.’

GDOP London Convener Jonathan Oloyede said, ‘I’m so pleased that the Baptist Union is supporting and encouraging over 2,000 churches to attend Wembley 2012. Together as we unite in prayer we will see God work through each Christian, all across the UK and beyond.’
