Prayer Reflection Video - 12 May 2025

Turning the tide - from Stephen Finamore, Baptist Union President 2024-25.

Here in Burnham on Sea on the west Somerset coast, one of the symbols of our town is the lower lighthouse that stands on the beach. It guides and it warns as the sea waters rise and fall on one of the largest tidal ranges in the world.

I believe the high water mark for UK Baptists came at the start of the 1900s when our membership was about a million. We're down now to about a tenth of that figure, but all those years the church has been like a lighthouse shining the light of the gospel - praying for the tide to turn, even as the waters receded.

As I visited churches in my role as President, I've heard stories of life and growth and wondered if, under the radar, something was changing. Then we got the news that the returns from the churches for 2024 showed a significant growth in baptisms and a Bible Society report said that congregations are growing.

Join me in praying that the tide has indeed turned, that the church will continue to shine the light of the gospel, and that we will be prepared for the move of God if and when, as we pray, it comes.
