The Revd David Baker: 1938-2024

Baptist minister with 'unquenchable love for people... and an ability to connect with them'

Revd David BakerIt is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of the Revd David Baker, who went to be with the Lord in the early hours of Sunday 29 September following several months' struggle with cancer. A father, minister and friend to many, David had a deep faith in Christ and a ministry which inspired thousands across eight decades.

Born in Sandown, Isle of Wight, David initially trained as a Methodist minister, but transferred to the Baptist Church in the late 60s, due to his convictions regarding adult baptism.

His first pastorate was at Harris Street Baptist Church, Peterborough (1968-73), where he and his wife, Pauline, were very much involved in the youth work of the church.

He then went on to lead congregations at Acomb Baptist Church, York (1973-77), Newtown Baptist Church, Powys (1977-1980), Canon Street Baptist Church, Accrington (1980-1983), Boston Baptist Church (1983-1990), Kings Heath Baptist Church (1990-1996) and finally Hugglescote Baptist Church (1996-2003). Even after retirement, he continued to preach at churches in the vicinity, as well as playing an active role at Park Road Baptist Church, Rushden.

Those who knew David will remember his unquenchable love for people and his ability to connect with them. In his early years, he would even play his accordion in church to lead the congregation in a few ‘modern choruses’.

He knew his congregations well, and was dedicated to his work, with pastoral visits and counselling being a key part of his ministry.

He was also Free Church Chaplain at Pilgrim Hospital in Boston during his time there.

David loved to chat, loved welcoming newcomers into his congregation, and he and Pauline would regularly invite people round for dinner, even inviting some to lodge with them free of charge.

During his ministry, David carried out countless baptisms. One memorable occasion at Boston Baptist Church saw him single-handedly baptise nine young people in one service, two of whom were his own sons, Ian and Robert.

David leaves behind six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two sons and many devoted followers of Christ. He will be greatly missed.
