Minister at home at Christmas tree festival

Hundreds of people visited the Christmas tree festival in Alvechurch Baptist Church in north Worcestershire - including Home Secretary Sajid Javid

Alvechurch visit Fiona LeeThe festival features trees decorated by 20 village organisations, many of whom use the church premises, and is timed to start with the Christmas lights switch-on ceremony on Advent weekend. The church is also decorated with paintings from local art groups which tell the Christmas story.

Around 3-400 people visited the church to see the trees and the paintings on the open evening on Friday (30 November), including Home Secretary Sajid Javid, the MP for Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.

The focus of the festival and its related events is fund-raising for young people who are homeless in Birmingham. It is splitting its fundraising between The Choir with No Name and St Basils. After visiting the Baptist church, Mr Javid tweeted, 'Inspiring trip to the Alvechurch Christmas Tree Festival today. They're also doing incredibly important work to help the homeless, proud to support them and encourage all constituents to go along.'

The trees and art will be in place right up until Christmas.
