Scarecrow nativity for Baptist church

A Baptist church created a scarecrow nativity in its local allotment on Sunday (21 December).

The nativity and short service took place on the allotments behind the Fleet Meadow Community Hall in Didcot where the church normally hosts its services.

The day began with a bacon or egg butty breakfast between 9-9.30am, followed by a scarecrow making time, where people were invited to come and create scarecrows in the form of Mary, Joseph, shepherds, wise men, and the angels.

Once the characters were created the group moved to its allotment plot for the service, where the 13 scarecrows were displayed as a backdrop to a retelling of the traditional Christmas story and singing of Christmas carols.

Hot drinks and mince pies were served at the end, and around 35 people gathered for the service.

‘We wanted to do something at the site for the festive season which brought the community together, and a nativity scene using scarecrows seemed like the logical answer,’ said church member Ian Bunce.
