'A tool for growth, creativity, and renewal'

A new video based resource designed to help churches reflect on their mission and ministry through the lens of other churches has launched

An aerial shot of lots of fields which contains the words "Doing Church Differently"

Doing Church Differently is a series highlighting the stories and reflections of three churches and a chaplain - and as each shares their story of mission and ministry, it is hoped there will be something that speaks to your context.

Doing Church Differently has been created by the Southern Counties Baptist Association.

Regional minister co team leader Hayley Young says the resource offers valuable insights for others in today's context.

'In an ever-changing world, churches must find innovative ways to engage with their communities and adapt to new challenges,' Hayley said.

'Doing Church Differently is a fantastic resource that provides churches with practical ideas, inspiration, and guidance on how to navigate these changes effectively.

'Whether you're looking to explore fresh expressions of church, rethink ministry approaches, or simply find encouragement in trying something new, this resource offers valuable insights to help churches thrive in today's context.'

Those featured in the resource are:

Shiloh Community Church in Guernsey, which has transitioned from a traditional Sunday-focused model to a community-driven mission, offering a food bank, clothing bank, mental health support, and cafés to serve those in need. Led by Christy Salmon, the church has adapted its worship and outreach to break barriers, build relationships, and transform lives through faith and practical support.

Ocean Church, which is a unique outdoor Christian community that gathers in nature, particularly on beaches, to integrate faith with the natural world and foster a missional way of life. Founded by John, it emphasises meeting with Jesus outdoors, hospitality, and discipleship beyond traditional church buildings, encouraging innovative expressions of worship and outreach.

Camberley Baptist Church shares their journey of renewal under new co-ministers Richard and Fran Bellingham, as they seek to grow as a missional, Jesus-focused community. Through partnerships and outreach initiatives like community clean-ups and resource-sharing, they aim to balance social action with faith, encouraging other churches to rethink their mission.

The final two videos explore military chaplaincy in the Royal Air Force (RAF) through Jonathan Stewart, a Baptist minister who transitioned from local church ministry to serving service personnel and their families. He shares the unique, immersive role of RAF chaplains in providing pastoral care, spiritual guidance, and confidential support in both everyday life and high-pressure environments

Each video has accompanying study notes to help participants reflect biblically on the themes. These can be used in small groups or for a church meeting.

'We encourage churches to take advantage of Doing Church Differently as a tool for growth, creativity, and renewal,' Hayley added.

'Whether you're just beginning to explore new ways of being church or you're already on the 'journey, this resource can support and equip you in meaningful ways.

'Let's embrace the opportunity to serve our communities with fresh vision and purpose—because church isn't just about where we gather, but how we live out our faith together.'
