Finding a way through the sabbatical

Two Baptist ministers are nearing the end of an adventurous, reflective and no doubt rather tiring chunk of their sabbatical.

James and Ruth NeveHusband and wife James and Ruth Neve have spent the last five weeks walking the ancient pilgrimage route the Camino de Santiago.

The 500 mile journey began in St. Jean Pied de Port in the south of France on 13 May and will finish in a few days in Santiago de Compostella in Galicia in the north west of Spain.

Ruth is senior minister at Thornhill Baptist Church in Southampton and James is the Free Church Chaplain at the University of Southampton.

‘I’m not sure how we got here,’ wrote James in the blog to accompany the pilgrimage, ‘but we love God, the mountains, walking and each other. We have the gift of a three month sabbatical… and in an inspired moment over a year ago we hit upon the idea of walking an ancient pilgrimage route.’

The route to Santiago de Compostela was featured in the 2011 film The Way, directed by Emilio Estevez and starring Martin Sheen.
