'Unprecedented moment' for Baptist preacher fellowship

For the first time in living memory, the Hertfordshire Fellowship of Baptist Preachers (HFBP) will see two of its current members begin formal ministerial training at a Baptist college - an 'unprecedented moment' in the Fellowship’s long history

Danny Smith (left), a member of Marshalswick Baptist Free Church in St Albans, is continuing his studies at Regent’s Park College, Oxford, and has accepted a call to serve as Minister in Training at Kingshill Baptist Church in Buckinghamshire.

Another HFBP member, Mark Buckley (right), of Markyate Baptist Church, will also begin his studies at Regent’s Park College this autumn, alongside taking up responsibilities as a Minister in Training.

Believed to be unique in England and Wales, the HFBP promotes continuous professional development (CPD) among its members - who are usually, though not exclusively, lay preachers called to itinerant ministry.

HFBP Chairman, Bob Little, said, 'We’re delighted to have supported Danny and Mark as they’ve developed their preaching and wider ministerial gifts in Baptist churches across Hertfordshire and beyond. It's an unprecedented moment for the Fellowship.

'Helping those exploring a call to full-time ministry to test that call under real-life conditions is one of our core purposes. It’s a privilege to play a part in equipping colleagues with the practical skills needed for a lifetime of ministry.'

He added, 'Danny’s and Mark’s progression means we are now open to new membership applications from Baptist church members in and around Hertfordshire who feel called to itinerant ministry - and who may wish to explore or test a calling to full-time service.'

The Hertfordshire Fellowship of Baptist Preachers exists to support churches - primarily Baptist congregations across Hertfordshire, though members gladly serve neighbouring counties when invited. Churches can expect HFBP preachers to be enthusiastic, capable, and well-prepared to preach and lead worship, whether offering occasional help or more regular support.

With records dating back to 1903 (and indications of even earlier origins), the Fellowship’s mission is to recognise, encourage, and nurture the gifts of preaching and worship leadership, strengthening Christian faith in line with Baptist convictions.
