UK Churches

In order to help Hong Kong families moving to UK, it’s good to know more about their needs.

The HK movers are starting from the beginning, so getting accurate information about available accommodation, schools, jobs, travel, tax and finance etc is important. Some general daily tips about DIY, gardening, grocery shopping and official applications (eg obtaining a National Insurance number, registering with a local GP, and applying for a driving licence) are needed. Language is another of the difficulties. Many have experienced their relationships with family members and friends being ripped apart by polarized political opinions.

These are all pressures faced by Hong Kong families arriving in the UK.

Click here for a story from Wendy Lau who arrived in England in September from Hong Kong. She describes how a Baptist church helped her family settle.

How UK churches can help

Churches could connect with the Hong Kong migrants who are preparing to leave Hong Kong or who have arrived in the UK, through the Hong Kong Response Project.  To be friends with Hong Kong families, and to be a signpost to information, is a way to help them settle.

Due to cultural differences, things that Hong Kongers find difficult and challenging are often simple and basic daily tasks for locals.  Accurate information, daily tips and your insight on lifestyle are useful for Hong Kong families.  Moreover, you could listen to their stories and pray for them.

The Baptist Union Hong Kong Response Project will provide some resources and gathering for helping Baptist churches to support Hong Kong families. Let’s build relationships with the Hong Kong families!

What to do next
  • Sign up as a Hong Kong-welcoming church to receive our free resources and stay in touch.
  • WelcomePut Chinese words of  'Welcome Hong Kongers' on your website and add a Chinese Traditional word to cheer them up.
  • Translate an introduction to your church into Chinese Traditional Words - we can help!
  • Apply a virtual banner to your website or a printed banner outside your church (when we are ready).
  • Contact Sharon for to invite her to share or preach in your church.
  • We also cooperate with another organisation, 'UKHK'. We encourage Baptist churches to also register as a HK-Ready Church at UKHK for more resources.
