He holds the degrees of MA and PhD from the University of Cambridge, where he studied history. His many books include The Bible and the Flag: Protestant Missions and British Imperialism in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries (1990), The History of the Baptist Missionary Society 1792–1992 (1992), The World Missionary Conference, Edinburgh 1910 (2009), and Christianity in the Twentieth Century: A World History (2018).
