Theology Live 2021 - speakers 


Theology Live is taking place as an online event in 2021 - and more details of the speakers have been released

Theology Live

Theology Live is a day which recognises the breadth of Baptists engaged in theological and biblical scholarship. It first took place in December 2017, with two subsequent events held in January 2019 and 2020. The day comprises a series of short papers, reflecting the diversity of current Baptist theological engagement, with opportunities to interact with speakers.

The next event takes place on 29 January, and is free to register


Confirmed speakers include:


Tim Judson, 'Worldly sorrow, cheap grace and white fragility'
Tim is pastor of Honiton Family Church in East Devon, and has very nearly submitted his PhD, exploring the place and meaning of lament in Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Christological Ecclesiology


Marion Carson, 'Moral Discernment in the Abraham and Sarah Narrative: Observations for Contemporary Pilgrims'
Marion serves as Chaplain to Glasgow City Mission, working with homeless people, those affected by addictions, and with asylum seekers and refugees. She is an adjunct supervisor at IBTSC Amsterdam and an Honorary Fellow at New College, University of Edinburgh. She is the author of The Pastoral Care of People with Mental Health Problems (SPCK) and Human Trafficking, the Bible and the Church: An Interdisciplinary Study (SCM).


Deb Stammers, 'Why don't people go to church anymore?': Perceptions of Christianity in a North Wales village'
Deb is half time minister of New Park Street Chapel, Holyhead, and half time pioneer minister working with the Welsh-speaking Baptist churches across Ynys Mon (Anglesey), North West Wales. She recently completed her MTh at South Wales Baptist College.


David McLachlan, 'Your Faith Has Healed You? Disability, Healing and the Trinity'
David is a Baptist minister and has been an associate lecturer at Spurgeon's College in London, teaching ministry students. There, he has also been researching the theology of disability since 2013, completing his PhD in 2018. The paper draws on some of that research.


Eleasah Phoenix Louis, 'Black British and De- Churched: Afroasiatic Religions, biblical genealogy and identity formation'
Eleasah is a member of All Nations Baptist Church (Clapham Park), and completing her PhD (Canterbury) in Theology and Religious Studies. Her research focuses on the presence of Black Nationalist (Afroasiatic) Religions and the influence they have on those on the fringes of the Black British Church body.


Alistair Cuthbert, 'Evil in God?: A Theological Case for a Robust Ontology of The Satan and Demonic within the Panentheistic Reality of God and Why it Matters Pastorally'
Alistair is minister at Falkirk Baptist Church in Central Scotland who is doing a PhD (University of St. Andrews) entitled ‘Participating in Divine Conflict: A Systematic Theology of Spiritual Warfare in Dialogue with Paul S. Fiddes.’


Philip Lutterodt, 'Gospel and Culture Interface: Lessons from the Ghanaian theologian Kwame Bediako'
Philip is Pastor at Mitcham Lane Baptist Church and studying for a PhD at University of Roehampton.


Lina Toth, 'Friendship in Christian Practice: Personal, Communal, Missional'
Lina is Assistant Principal and Lecturer in Practical Theology at the Scottish Baptist College in Paisley, Scotland, UK, and Adjunct Lecturer and Supervisor/Promotor at the International Baptist Theological Study Centre, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.


Paulus De Jong, 'Living out Christ's commandments: Jesus, the Spirit, and moral transformation in the Gospel of John'
Paulus is completing his PhD at University of St. Andrews on "John and Torah: scriptural reuse in the Fourth Gospel"


Meghan Byerly, 'Baptist Ecclesiology and the Necessary Virtue of Obedience'
Meghan is associate minister at Cemetery Road Baptist Church, Sheffield and completing a PhD with Northern Baptist College and the University of Manchester
