Summit to discuss UK action on the Refugee Crisis

Christian Aid and Citizens UK will host a summit this Saturday (10 September) in Birmingham, giving people a chance to take stock of the UK’s response to the crisis and press their politicians to do more.

Hundreds of supporters from across the country are expected to attend the Welcome Summit, which takes place one year on from the tragic death of three-year-old Syrian, Alan Kurdi.

Attendees will be able pose questions directly to politicians and UN agencies around key issues, including the protection of refugee children and opportunities for local fundraising activities.

Members of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Refugees and Labour spokesperson on refugees, Yvette Cooper are among those confirmed to participate in the summit.

Top specialists and local groups will lead workshops on interacting with child refugees, trafficking, communicating with refugees and building more welcoming communities.

Christian Aid’s Alex Jones said: 'We believe everyone deserves a safe place to call home. While many churches and communities across the UK are united in welcoming those seeking refuge, the response of the UK Government has not matched the scale of the crisis.

'The Welcome Summit is a key moment for us to show politicians, the media and the people of Britain that our country is ready to do more to welcome those who are fleeing violence and disaster.'

'I hope to benefit from connecting with so many inspirational people and feel the energy they will bring to this exciting event,' said attendee Ruth Alexander form Pitlochry Refugee Support in Perthshire, Scotland (Citizens UK).

The event will start at 10:30am at the Saffron Centre, Moseley Road, with refreshments and artistic performances, followed by an opportunity to pose questions to politicians.
