Communion in community: The Big Picnic

With a picnic, entertainers and communion, not too mention a welcome dose of sun, lunch at this year’s Assembly was both informal and quietly moving.

Those attending were asked to come prepared for a picnic with hampers, fold-down chairs, pop-up tables all welcome.

They were sent from the main auditorium by President Jenni Entrican with instructions to grab a communion kit – a gluten free roll, non-alcoholic juice, and a communion liturgy – gather in groups of around ten, and serve communion to each other. It enabled the renewing of old friendships, and the beginning of new ones.

The Big Picnic took place on the grounds of the King’s Park Conference Centre, on the grass and in a marquee. Delegates were joined by artists from CircusMASH, who demonstrated their skills in stilt walking, hula hooping and juggling. There was an opportunity to have a go at juggling, spinning plates and hula hooping. Chris Duffett and Dave the Clown amazed with their skills in balloon modelling, while fellow Baptist minister Nick Lear entertained all ages with his magic tricks.
