Christmas - The Story at Port Talbot, South Wales
“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favour rests.”
Luke 2:14 NIV
Rob Morse, Minister at Pentyrch Street Baptist Church in Cardiff, read these words to the church in Grangetown on Sunday where I was sat in the congregation. "What are you thinking?" he asked the church, a group of around 40 people from varying backgrounds whom he has been getting to know as he comes to share ministry from time to time. “Christmas" I shouted back.
It’s not usually in the summer when we look to the Christmas story. However churches have already been busy bringing people and plans together for this year’s Christmas - The Story
, a theatrical performance of the Nativity, bringing the Gospel to life in our communities.
Here's what happened last year in Port Talbot with your help from a Home Mission grant.
Using as a venue the upstairs room of a retail store in the Aberafan Shopping Centre, transformed with professional staging, lighting and sound, churches in Port Talbot had come together to present Christmas - The Story
. With narration and music, the actors performed the Nativity Story to over 1300 people who came in to enjoy the week’s performances. Over 450 children and young people attended from local schools. The cast comprised 42 people, with a hologram for the angel.
Others were working hard behind the scenes assisting with the technical side. There were amazing costume workshops and activities for children. People assisted on a stewarding rota and with promoting each show on the shop floor, with at least two performances of the Nativity a day, some in the Welsh language. Feedback was very positive and there are plans for the churches to continue working ecumenically in mission to the community. Click here for a Presentation on the Port Talbot Story
You can read, see and hear more of Christmas - The Story
, which as well as the above event in Port Talbot supported by Home Mission, was held in Aberdare, Cardiff and Carmarthen in South Wales.
